FAQ

You're probably
wondering...

  • Why do you offer fixed fees?
Fixed fees fit our unique overall approach of honesty and transparency. We break down our pricing structure into easy-to-understand stages, so you are totally aware of all costs upfront. This also enables our clients to feel free to openly communicate with us to achieve the best possible outcomes without the fear of increasing their costs. We are proud to say that we are a small family law firm that focuses on keeping our overheads down through the use of virtual offices, highly efficient work practices and cutting-edge technology. This means we don’t have to charge high hourly rates or other ridiculous administrative fees that you might be charged by other law firms, and it enables us to give your case the full attention it deserves.
  • If you use virtual offices, where can we meet?
We like our clients to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible when discussing highly emotional topics. We will come to you and meet with you in an informal setting! If you prefer a more formal location, we have everyday access to office locations during business hours in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne or can arrange to visit your workplace, your home or any other venue that you are comfortable in. We also offer online appointments via ZOOM for clients in any other part of Australia, except for Western Australia (due to different laws in WA).
  • Are there any type of family law matters that you don’t do?
No, we cover all aspects of family law. If you have any questions, give us a call!
  • Will you represent me in Court if we can’t reach a settlement?
98% of family law cases settle out of court, but, if necessary, yes we would represent you in court.
  • Is there any other hidden costs and disbursements charged by third parties that are not included in your fees?
The Family and Federal Circuit Courts charge fees for filing documents (such as an Application for Divorce or Consent Orders), so we will pass these charges onto you, but these charges will always be clearly indicated on your invoice, and we never charge you more than the court’s fees. On occasions you might need to get a valuation of your property or your superannuation. These costs are usually several hundred dollars. We will provide you with the details of persons who can provide these valuations for you (should they be required). A title search is required for financial settlements for all real property. You can purchase a copy of your property’s title online directly from most of the local State or Territory Land Titles Office. For properties in New South Wales, you will need to use third party providers such as InfoTrack. Alternatively, we can do it for you and pass on any costs involved.
  • For your online services, can my partner and I complete it together?
Absolutely, many of our clients complete the questionnaires together. Alternatively, one of you can take on the responsibility to prepare the paperwork as best they can. If you decide to do it this way, we recommend you ask your former partner to complete this form and send it back to you before you get started.
  • What is a financial disclosure?
The court requires you both to have a clear understanding of each other’s finances before finalising any property settlement agreement. The Family Court website has helpful information on disclosure and the rules around what is required along with the penalties for non-compliance.
  • If I don't live in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra, can you still help me?
Yes! Our services are available Australia-wide (except for WA). If you engage us and live outside of the ACT, Sydney or Melbourne we can get in touch with you online via Zoom or over the phone, instead of meeting you in person. We will travel to see you, at our own cost, when required.
  • Should I book in to an advice session alone, or should I come in with my partner?
We are firm believers in a fair and just outcome for all! A faster, fairer and more affordable separation is more likely if you can find an amicable outcome and work together to finalise your divorce. That being said, it is better if you come alone and we retain you as a client so that your partner can obtain independent legal representation.
  • Do my partner and I have to obtain legal advice if we've reached an agreement?
There is no legal requirement to obtain legal advice if you have reached an agreement and decide to make your agreement official through consent orders. If you’re unsure of your next steps or don’t totally understand something, we would strongly recommend you obtain some independent legal advice.
  • If we elect to get legal advice, can you advise both myself AND my partner?
No. We can only advise one party, be we would be happy to provide contact details to your former partner of some very capable family lawyers in your state or territory.
